What are all these games?
Are the games on this site foreign to you? Did you think that the world of board games were limited to games like Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit or Risk? Well I have got news for you, over the last twenty years board games have come a long way. You may not see them at your local big box store, but the board game scene has exploded in the last ten years to the point where over 500 new games are released each year. What kinds of games are out there? There is something for everyone. If you are looking for a party-style game there are lots of great options such as “Wits and Wagers” or “Time’s Up.” If you are looking for a great family game look into “Ticket to Ride” or the exciting cooperative game “Forbidden Island.” If you really want to dig your teeth into a deep strategic game there is that too with “Agricola” or “Puerto Rico.” Ready to dive in? The largest game resource out there is the incredible website www.boardgamegeek.com or you can also learn more about modern board games from my podcast “How to Play” at www.howtoplaypodcast.com. What is How to Play?
How to Play is an audio podcast all about teaching and learning games. Each episode contains a FULL rules explanation organized in the best way I know how to explain the game to you as if you were sitting across the table from me. It is my hope that people use this show to -learn about new games -learn how to correctly play games easily and in an entertaining way -learn how to teach games effectively The format of the explanation is based on the structure I explain in my article, How to Teach Games: a General Primer. To hear a full introduction to the show listen to Episode #0 posted above in which I introduce myself and the concept of the show. You can access the show from this website or subscribe on itunes.
The HTP Method for Teaching Games
Here is my original article on teaching games that I wrote on March 9th, 2008 with which the methods I used to eventually develop the How to Play Podcast. Feel free to read the article or listen to the audio version, Episode A, by playing the episode at the top of this page. How To Teach Games: A General Primer Class is in session! Listen up kids, today’s topic is how to teach games. Pay attention there will be homework. When playing a game with players new to a game, how well the game is taught is the most important element to whether the game is an enjoyable experience or a painful one. Most of us here on this site are the ones constantly trying to spread our hobby by introducing these games of ours to friends and family who may not be familiar with such games. If you introduce a game poorly, it is unlikely you will have earned yourself future games. If you do a great job teaching the game, not only will they wish to play that game again, but they may start to ask about other games in your closet, and you may have created some…
HTP Complexity Rating Scale
How to Play assigns each game a complexity rating in one of four familiar categories Green Circle: This game is easy enough to be enjoyed by all. The game is simple, relatively short and easy to teach. Blue Square: This game is suitable for gamers or nongamers. It is moderately complex, it may have a longer playtime and may have unusual mechanics unfamiliar to nongamers. These games are suitable for anyone to learn and enjoy given they are willing to put forth a little effort in learning the game. Black Diamond: These games cross the realm into “gamer’s games.” They typically can last over two hours and require a significant amount of mental effort to learn. Though the games are manageable enough to play strategically in one play. Double Black Diamond: These are some of the most complex games out there. They are complex enough to require more than one play in order to play following all of the rules correctly or to play with any concept of the basic strategies of the game. These games are only for “gamers” who are interested in playing the game multiple times to reach full understanding of the game.
HTP Teaching Guides
Ever open up a game you haven’t played for a while and feel too rusty on the rules to teach it? Or need help teaching a game you don’t know too well? How to Play teaching guides are here to help! Just about every game covered on the How to Play podcast has it’s own Teaching Guide! The Teaching Guides are downloadable from this website. Find the links to the teaching guides on the episode page for the game you are looking for. Our How to Play Teaching guides are available in full color… or in black and white…
What listeners have to say about HTP
Reviews posted on itunes… “I listen to several, ok a lot of gaming podcasts, and I have yet to find any that teach you to play board games better than the How to Play podcast. Mr. Sturm is a wonderful educator. He is clear with rules explanations, and makes it fun to listen. Sometimes though, his characters are a little goofy, but over all fun. Take your time and give How to Play a listen.” “The content is top notch. From all the board gaming podcasts out there, Ryan has by far the best instructions for learning and teaching games. And all that without pictures! Truly a piece of art. Ryan is clear and (most of the time) concise. The explanations are well structured and easy to digest.” “If you think reading game rules is fun –and I do! — then this podcast is for you. Ryan gives clear, charming explanations of rules and strategies, with some interesting thoughts on how and why we play games on the side. I look forward to many great explanations to come.” “Best Boardgaming Podcast…and I listen to them all. Most podcasts bribe you to rate them with giveaways. I am writing this review…

The mechanics of the game are simple but navigating the strategy can be quite challenging, hopefully listening to this show can give you a leg up on your first few plays of this great game or on how to teach this game. In the musings for this game I muse on Honesty and compare Le Havre to some similar games. Special Note: In the description for this game I talk a bit about how terrible loans are. Episode A – How to Teach Games
Here is my original article on teaching games that I wrote on March 9th, 2008 with which the methods I used to eventually develop the How to Play Podcast. Feel free to read the article or listen to the audio version, from the player at the top of the page. If you do a great job teaching the game, not only will they wish to play that game again, but they may start to ask about other games in your closet, and you may have created some budding new gamers,…
